酸碱平衡是指精确地维持血液和组织液中的氢离子浓度，使机体能够正常运转。
体液中氢的浓度称为PH，体液的酸碱性用 pH 值表示
正常血液 pH 值范围为 7.35 至 7.45。
新陈代谢过程会不断释放酸性物质，酸性物质会自由释放氢离子，导致酸度增加和血液 pH 值降低。
对此，人体可以使用化学缓冲剂（如碱）来中和酸性物质，并使用生理缓冲剂来促进酸性物质通过肾脏排出体外。
当过度换气导致呼出过多二氧化碳时，就会发生呼吸性碱中毒
如果呼吸清除二氧化碳的速度快于身体产生二氧化碳的速度，就会出现二氧化碳不足的情况

治疗因摄入过量碳酸氢盐而导致的代谢性碱中毒的方法包括减少碳酸氢盐的用量，同时让肾脏排出多余的碳酸氢盐。
对于因呕吐导致的代谢性碱中毒，服用止吐药可减轻恶心和呕吐。
