From a certain distance, the picture, which portrays a traditional Chinese hotpot, looks very appetizing. A closer look, however, reveals that what contents in the pot are not beef or lamb, but a combination of varieties of cultures, such as Buddhism, Shakespeare, postmodernism, Kongfu, etc.
The artist of the cartoon apparently intends to draw our attention to the prevailing social phenomenon that with the development of the Internet and globalization, not only our traditional culture such as Beijing opera and Confucianism sees an upside revival, but also foreign cultures find their way into our everyday life. Just as what the name of the picture suggests, “A hotpot of culture is both delicious and nutritious”. “Delicious” refers to the fact that people are fascinated by these cultural varieties, while “nutritious” stands for the enrichment of people’s spiritual life as they improve their material life. The great popularity of such scholars as Yu Dan, Yi Zhongtian and Er Yuehe is evident proof of a revival of the pursuit of cultural life.
This passing year, I personally believe, only marks the beginning of a banquet of various cultures. The government should make due efforts to promote the revival and integration of different cultures, while individuals should spare no efforts in indulging themselves in this splendid “hotpot of culture”.
